The game is being developed by Merge Games, a small team.
Survival Elements
Smalland has several survival elements and leans toward hard survival. First of course, you must eat, but eating and drinking are handled with just eating. You also must maintain temperature, which will change just with the weather. I suspect if you are not prepared for winter you could have to start over. I also froze to death in my base, which had no roof but I was standing next to my campfire. Rain will also make your character super cold, requiring you to find shelter.
Base Building
there is custom base building in the top of a tree and later you will have the option to change trees, and have everything brought over for you. This is an awesome feature, Pick the first available tree and start building. Later when you want to move, The game will seamlessly move your base instantly, when you request it.
Crafting
You will be crafting almost everything you need. I did not find one completed item in my play, but its possible vendors have somethings you can buy that are finished.
Looting
Everything I looted was a crafting component. I have yet to find even one container, it is all about gathering what you need from the world and creatures. Looting new materials can unlock crafting recipes as well, so looting the widest variety of items is the best thing to do.
Combat, Main Enemy Types
As you already guessed this is a Zombie free title that is loaded down with insects.
Characters and Leveling
There is a character creation screen with Male and Female, and some cosmetic changes. When you level you can put points into your attributes.
Creature Taming and Mounts
You can already tame several creatures to help get around. The grasshopper is quiet fun, but can easily cause you to jump into water, water = bad day at the Smallands.
Weather Impacts on Gameplay
The weather impacts gameplay, rain will destroy your structures if you don’t have a roof. Rain also makes your character cold. There are seasons as well, I did not yet make it to winter, which I suspect could drastically make the game harder.
Game Modes
There is peaceful mode where creatures wont attack unless attacked, and Co-Op.
Map
The map is a very large hand crafted map.
Over Gameplay Difficulty
This game swings on the harder side. It is very easy to die, from the weather and creatures.
Game Summary
I was expecting a Grounded clone, but it is not. I am enjoying this one a lot, and can’t wait to see where it goes from here. They have already done a good job as is. Smalland is an enjoyable survival game. You will indeed need to survive the elements, I enjoy the progression as well, finding a new material leads to new crafting options, so you are always trying to find something new to harvest or a new bug to kill. When you do upgrade equipment, you actually can tell the difference without using a calculator.

Tame and ride creatures
Uncover recipes that will let you tame and ride an array of critters. Leap huge distances on the back of a Grasshopper, zoom around on a Damselfly, scurry from place-to-place on a Spider. This world and its inhabitants are yours to conquer.
Survive together
Play alongside friends with support for up to 10 players in multiplayer. Explore together, fight together, build together and survive the wilds as a team.
Build encampments on the ground or amongst the trees
Scavenge or refine resources to build your encampment with multiple material tiers, from leaves and twigs to sturdy stone. Pick your favourite spot in the world and build, or scale vast trees and claim your own settlement at the top.
Craft powerful armour sets
Collect powerful armours that provide you with resistances and abilities and mix them up to personalise your appearance. Glide through the skies in winged armour, swing from tree to tree with the grappling hook and many more.
Survive the Wilds
Most of the creatures you encounter will see you as lower on the food chain – Ants, Cockroaches, Beetles, Wasps, and Spiders all view you as a potential meal. Weather conditions and seasons are in constant flux so if you want to survive for another day, preparation is key.
