Game Engine

Hobo Tough Survival was created with the Unity Engine.

Developer

The game was created by Perun Creative.

Survival Elements

Hobo Tough Survival has a surprising number of survival elements. Temperature, Wetness, Food, Water, Morale, and more. Get wet and you will quickly get sick and die. In the beginning, you will have to go very slow to survive.

Base Building

There is custom base building in fixed locations, keep in mind you are a hobo so you probably wont be pulling off a 4 star hotel.

Crafting

There are a lot of things to craft. I have died many many times, and have not been able to craft much at this point.

Looting

You will be looting almost everything from what I can tell. I don’t believe you can “gather” anything, but have not lived long enough to test this.

Combat, Main Enemy Types

There are some enemies, but the one fight I was in to date, I started. I can see where you will be wanting to fight some people but I think these will be less often.

Characters and Leveling

Hobo Tough Life has pre-made characters, 3 of them are locked behind achievements and one is available to start the game. There is a detailed leveling system. There also appears to be a detailed “base perk” system.

Creature Taming and Mounts

I don’t know if there is any taming, I see no signs of mounts or vehicles.

Weather Impacts on Gameplay

The weather has a severe impact on game-play. Even just nights being colder will prevent you from sleeping, and being to cold leads to other problems (including death). I can’t wait to make it to a full blown winter.

Game Modes

Normal, Hardcore, and Hardcore+ (permadeath). The game is server based, so when you start a game it starts a server, with a host option to not allow anyone to join.

Controls

The game has map-able controls, and invert Y axis.

Map

The map for Hobo Tough Life is hand crafted.

Hours

I have spent 3 hours trying to get a handle on being homeless. It is a lot harder then you think.

Over Gameplay Difficulty

The game systems seem easy enough to understand. The game however is very challenging. If you have played a lot of survival games this one makes you take a step back and rethink about how to accomplish goals. For example I starved to death on more than one occasion, before it occurred to me to beg to everyone I could find to get enough money to buy food. The survival systems really add up to create a challenging experience.

Game Summary

Hobo Tough Life is a good game with challenging survival elements. If you are tired of Zombies, and want a little different experience don’t be afraid to give this one a try.

Developers Stated Features

Keep an eye on your needs and other variables, which interact in realistic ways – staying warm, dry, and well-fed are not your only concerns. Poor hygiene and dirty clothes make you smellier, low temperature increases the risk of falling ill, and whatever piece of food comes in must also come out at some point.

How far are you willing to go to survive? Steal, burgle, and consort with criminals of all sorts. If necessary, take what you need by force. However, you are not an action hero. Consider your actions carefully, for the consequences are often severe, and benefits rarely outweigh the risks. Most importantly, keep your wits about you. Even if you are not willing to hurt people for personal gain, others are.

Spend the last few days of autumn wisely – gather supplies, equipment, and materials to help you survive the most difficult of seasons. Weather is unpredictable, but there is one certainty – every day is colder than the last. With a lot of preparation and a bit of luck, you might even see the spring again.

Unlike other survival games, Hobo: Tough Life leans heavily on its story content. Experience dozens of storylines inspired by real-life events and people. Solve quests, meet unique NPCs, gain their trust, make allies and enemies, join various factions, and find your place in the streets of Praslav.

Maybe there is no warm apartment waiting for you at the end of the day, but you do not have to keep sleeping on park benches either. Find a suitable place and get to work. Construct walls and roofs to shield you from the elements. Gather discarded furniture and curios to furnish your hideout and make it truly your own.
