Full Release Title

Ark Survival Evolved was fully released on 08/27/2017. There have also been numerous expansion maps for this game.

Game Engine

Ark Survival Evolved is built with the Unreal 4 Engine. They are currently working Ark Survival Ascended which will be mostly Ark Survival on Unreal Engine 5 with new gameplay elements. Ark has both single player and Server options available. Hosting your own server is often the preferred method even for single player as it allows for greater control of the server elements including creature stasis, and linking the maps together essentially creating one monstrous map.

Survival Elements

Despite it’s name Ark Survival Evolved is really trying to kill you. Below is just some of the ways you will die.

BIG TEETHY dinosaurs
Lack of Food
Lack of Water

Heat
Cold
Rabies
Swamp Fever
Lamprey Poison
Radiation
Did I mention teethy dinosaurs?

Ignore any of the above items and you WILL die.

Base Building

Ark Survival Evolved, has all the standard base building options. There are multiple types of materials from straw all the way up to tech. Although I shouldn’t have to say it straw obviously isn’t much of a deterrent for a T-Rex. You will need a base, and probably make several in different areas with different materials.

Crafting

Ark Survival Evolved, has many more items to craft than one character can unlock. Every level you get points to spend in the crafting tree and the first several level it pays to be selective, as there are not enough points to unlock everything.

Looting

Tis much loot! Dinosaurs will drop loot, (Don’t ask me where they store it). Also there are drop pods which drop items and blueprints, usually allowing you to craft a better quality item. These blueprints also allow you to craft things you may have not spent points on while leveling up.

Combat, Main Enemy Types

I Know I know, you are never going to believe this, I’m not even sure I should try to explain it…. but here goes anyway. Ark’s main enemy type is TADAH DINOSAURS!! aaaannnnddd if you are playing on a server other people. Some of them can make a T-Rex look like a bunny rabbit. There are only dinosaur enemy types in single player mode.

Characters and Leveling

Ark lets you create both Male and Female Characters. Characters will gain experience through all the standard activities, as well as just not dying. When you level you will be given points to assign to your main stats and a separate set of points to learn crafting recipes (engrams).

Creature Taming and Mounts

Ark Survival Evolved is all about the mounts. You can tame, ride and abuse almost any creature in the game. Many are used for the harvesting of materials for crafting and base building.

Game Modes

Ark doesn’t have game modes but can be completely customized when starting a new game with any settings you want, and a “single player” server setting.

Map

Ark has many different maps, both as part of the game from the developers as well as maps made by the Mod community.

Weather Impacts on Gameplay

The major element missing from Ark Survival Evolved is the weather. The game has your standard weather effects, but none of these significantly impacts your gameplay. You will have to monitor your temperature, but that is regardless of the actual weather and has more to do with the biome you are currently in.

Over Gameplay Difficulty

Ark Survival Evolved is in all honesty, brutal. If you are trying to decide if you can play this on single player, yes absolutely. The server settings can be adjusted to adapt to the amount of time you have to play. Don’t have all day to harvest trees? Just increase the harvest multiplier. You will die ALOT ALOT ALOT. BUT it is worth it. You haven’t lived until you have ridden a high level Thylacoleo. Personally I was never a huge fan of dinosaurs, this game changed all of that.
